The Visit Of The Master

Description

Clover the Clever, Sombra and Starswirl the Bearded

It was a late summer evening; the sun had been lowered and was sinking behind the horizon. Our cottage has gone quiet, my son had been put into bed and I sat in my study trying to solve the question “how much morning-dew I would have to ad to my mixture to get the wanted results”. The last four tries all ended in a catastrophe, which kind I don’t want to tell. I was about to add the dew, it was then that I heard them. Hoof steps.  Hoof steps coming up to the road to our Cottage. That was strange.

Sure we got visitors from time to time. Ponies from nearby villages seeking my guidance, farmers in need of a solution for whatever was decimating their crops or on occasion young mares asking for love potions (which I would never give them, just to be clear). But they NEVER came at this time of the day.

The hoof steps stopped. Whoever it was he was right on my doorstep. For moment there was silence, but it was broken by the ringing of the doorbell. I got up form my unfinished mixture making my way towards the front door. “Who is it?” I called out, before I even got to the door. The answer I got was one I had not expected. “Where are your manners Clover? To shout at the closed door like that!” This voice - It was his voice. I had not seen him in years. The last time I saw him was when he freed us all from the havoc reeking Sea-Demons known as ‘The Sirens’.

Without hesitation I opened the door. There he was. An old gray coated Unicorn Stallion. Clad in a blue robe decorated with stars, moons and bells. His mane and beard seemed even longer than he last time I saw him. But he was not wearing his hat… When I later asked him why he said “I... lost it … and there is no need to by a new one.” and that was all he would tell me.

“Mommy? Who is that?” a voice asked from behind. It seemed that my son thought finding out who could visit at this hour was far more important than sleeping. As he came closer he gazed upon Master Starswirl with awe, as he observed his height, long horn and cloven hoofs. "Master Starswirl, this is my son Sombra." Starswirl look at the dark coated colt with his ever so gentle eyes.

(…)

After I brought Sombra back to bed the Master and I talked about what had occurred since the last time we saw each other. I was a joyful company. But when I brought up his heroic deed, the banishment of the Sirens, his gaze became sad, I could have sworn I saw a single tear running down his cheek… but why would he cry about the Sirens? And then after a long moment of silence, he asked a question to which I still don't know the answer to, I'm not sure if I even want to find an answer.

"Clover... If you would witness your own child becoming something awefull, somepony who would only care for himself and hurt others... how far would you go to stop him?"
